30-Minute Stovetop Homemade Dog Food

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) boneless, skinless chicken breast (halal certified)
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 large carrots, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup rice (brown or white)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or coconut oil
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth (halal certified)
  • 1/2 cup peas (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric (optional)
  • Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Ingredients

  1. Prepare the Vegetables: Peel and cube the sweet potatoes, peel and dice the carrots, and set them aside. If you’re using peas, ensure they are thawed if frozen or rinsed if using canned.
  2. Cook the Rice: In a medium pot, cook the rice according to the package instructions. Typically, you’ll use 2 cups of water for every 1 cup of rice. If you prefer, you can also cook the rice in the chicken broth to infuse more flavor.

Cook the Chicken

  1. Cook the Chicken: While the rice is cooking, heat the olive oil (or coconut oil) in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chicken breasts and cook for 5-7 minutes on each side until they are fully cooked and no longer pink inside.
  2. Shred the Chicken: Once the chicken is cooked, let it cool for a few minutes and then shred it into small, bite-sized pieces. Make sure there are no bones or skin in the chicken before shredding.

Cook the Vegetables

  1. Cook the Sweet Potatoes and Carrots: In a separate pot, bring the chicken broth to a simmer over medium heat. Add the sweet potatoes and carrots, cooking for about 10 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender and easily pierced with a fork.
  2. Add Peas (Optional): In the last 2-3 minutes of cooking the vegetables, add the peas to the pot to heat them through.

Combine the Ingredients

  1. Combine Everything: Once the rice is done cooking and the vegetables are tender, combine the shredded chicken, cooked rice, and vegetables into a large mixing bowl. Stir everything together until evenly mixed.
  2. Add Turmeric and Parsley (Optional): If you’re using turmeric, sprinkle it over the mixture and stir it in. You can also add a sprinkle of fresh parsley to boost the flavor and nutrition.

Serve the Meal

  1. Cool and Serve: Let the food cool down for a few minutes before serving it to your dog. You can portion out the food into your dog’s bowl, serving it as a standalone meal or mixing it with their regular food.
