Beef and Spinach Meatball Dog Food

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb lean ground beef (choose a lean variety to reduce fat content)
  • 1 cup spinach, finely chopped (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 egg (helps bind the ingredients together)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (a great source of fiber)
  • 1/4 cup grated carrots (for added nutrients and fiber)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for healthy fats)
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, finely chopped (optional, for fresh breath and digestive health)
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric (optional, for anti-inflammatory benefits)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional, for seasoning)
  • 1/2 cup water or low-sodium beef broth (to keep the meatballs moist)

Instructions

Prepare the Meatball Mixture:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent the meatballs from sticking.
  2. Mix the Beef and Veggies: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped spinach, grated carrots, and parsley (if using). Use your hands or a spoon to mix everything together.
  3. Add the Wet Ingredients: Crack the egg into the mixture, and add the olive oil, turmeric (if using), and salt (optional). Stir well to ensure all the ingredients are fully combined.
  4. Incorporate the Oats: Gradually add the rolled oats to the mixture. The oats will help bind the meatballs and provide fiber to support digestion. Mix until the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  5. Add Water or Broth: Pour in the water or low-sodium beef broth and stir the mixture until it reaches a consistency that can be easily shaped into meatballs. If the mixture is too dry, add a little more water or broth. If it’s too wet, add a bit more oats to firm it up.

Shape and Bake the Meatballs:

  1. Shape the Meatballs: Using your hands, scoop out small portions of the meatball mixture and roll them into balls about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Place the meatballs on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about an inch apart.
  2. Bake the Meatballs: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 25-35 minutes, or until the meatballs are golden brown on the outside and fully cooked through. To check for doneness, insert a meat thermometer into the center of a meatball – it should read at least 165°F (74°C).
  3. Cool the Meatballs: Allow the meatballs to cool on the baking sheet for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Serve and Store:

  1. Serve the Meatballs: Once the meatballs have cooled completely, serve them to your dog as part of a balanced meal. You can serve them on their own or mix them with rice, vegetables, or a bit of homemade dog-safe gravy for added flavor.
  2. Store Leftovers: Store any leftover meatballs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. If you want to store them for longer, you can freeze the meatballs for up to 3 months. Simply place the cooled meatballs in a freezer-safe bag or container and thaw them when ready to serve.
