Fish and Smash Potato Dog Food

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 fillets of fresh fish (salmon, cod, or whitefish; ensure it’s boneless and skinless)
  • 3 medium potatoes (Yukon gold or sweet potatoes work well)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional for added healthy fat)
  • 1 cup peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup carrots, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed (optional, for additional omega-3s and fiber)
  • A pinch of sea salt (optional, be mindful of salt intake for dogs)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Fish:

  1. Cook the Fish:
    • Begin by placing your fish fillets in a pot of water or low-sodium chicken broth. Bring it to a boil and then reduce the heat, letting it simmer for about 10-12 minutes, or until the fish is fully cooked and flakes easily with a fork.
    • Once cooked, remove the fish from the pot and set it aside to cool. After it cools, carefully flake the fish into bite-sized pieces, removing any bones that might remain.

2. Prepare the Potatoes:

  1. Cook the Potatoes:
    • Peel the potatoes and chop them into chunks. Place them in a large pot and cover them with water. Bring the water to a boil and cook the potatoes for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are fork-tender.
    • Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Mash them using a potato masher or fork until they reach a smooth, creamy consistency. You can add a tablespoon of olive oil to give them a little extra richness and healthy fat, but this step is optional.

3. Cook the Vegetables:

  1. Cook the Peas and Carrots:
    • While the potatoes are cooking, steam the peas and carrots for about 5-7 minutes, until they are tender. If using frozen peas, simply heat them through in the steam basket.
    • Once cooked, set the vegetables aside.

4. Combine the Ingredients:

  1. Mix Together:
    • In a large bowl, combine the flaked fish, mashed potatoes, peas, and carrots. Stir everything together, making sure that the ingredients are evenly distributed. You can add a tablespoon of ground flaxseed for extra omega-3s and fiber if desired.

5. Serve and Cool:

  1. Cool and Serve:
    • Allow the Fish and Smash Potato Dog Food to cool to room temperature before serving it to your dog. This ensures that the food is safe to eat.
    • Garnish with a pinch of fresh parsley for added nutrients, if desired.

6. Store Leftovers:

  1. Storing Leftovers:
    • Any leftover food can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
    • Alternatively, you can freeze individual portions for up to 3 months. Just make sure to thaw them before serving.
