Instant Pot Dog Food Recipe

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or thighs)
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed (about 2 cups)
  • 1 cup peas (fresh or frozen)
  • ½ cup carrots, diced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or coconut oil
  • 1 ½ cups low-sodium chicken broth or water (ensure it’s free from onions, garlic, or spices)
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric (optional, for anti-inflammatory benefits)
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseeds (optional, for additional fiber and Omega-3 fatty acids)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional, for digestive support)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

  1. Chop the Vegetables: Peel and cube the sweet potatoes, dice the carrots, and measure out the peas. Set them aside for later use.
  2. Prepare the Chicken: If you’re using chicken breasts or thighs, chop them into smaller pieces to help them cook faster and more evenly in the Instant Pot.

Step 2: Add Ingredients to the Instant Pot

  1. Layer the Ingredients: Add the chicken, sweet potatoes, peas, and carrots to the Instant Pot. Pour in the low-sodium chicken broth or water to ensure the ingredients are covered with liquid.
  2. Add Oils and Spices: Drizzle the olive oil or coconut oil over the ingredients and add the turmeric, ground flaxseeds, and apple cider vinegar if using. Stir to combine.

Step 3: Set the Instant Pot

  1. Close the Lid: Lock the lid of the Instant Pot and set the valve to the sealing position.
  2. Set Cooking Time: Set the Instant Pot to cook on Manual/Pressure Cook for 35 minutes on high pressure. The Instant Pot will take a few minutes to come to pressure before cooking begins.

Step 4: Pressure Release and Shred

  1. Release Pressure: Once the cooking time is complete, allow the Instant Pot to naturally release pressure for about 10 minutes. After that, carefully switch the valve to the venting position to release any remaining pressure.
  2. Shred the Chicken: Open the Instant Pot and use two forks to shred the chicken. Stir the shredded chicken back into the mixture to combine with the vegetables and broth.

Step 5: Let it Cool

  1. Cool the Dog Food: Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature before serving it to your dog. This helps prevent burns and ensures that the food is safe to eat.
  2. Portion the Food: Depending on your dog’s size and dietary needs, divide the food into appropriate portions. You can store leftover portions in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days or freeze them for later use.
